Presentation was put together well - graphics in the service of real information. Progression of environment restored through the years. Long-term planning, not just for now but for the future - parking lots eventually converted into planted areas. Multi-cultural, muli-use area.

Susan Szenasy - Interesting design. We love going to big boxes but they've done terrible things to our environment. This design broke apart the bix box - green roof, elevated parking garage with garden on top. People that shop there can enjoy what nature is around them. Liked the concept of compression (human footprint) and decompression (natural footprint).

Tom Schueler - This category is a challenging one - drew the fewest entries but the award winners were quite notable in their solutions. Typical big box retail is one part roof to two parts parking. This design showed thinking outside the box - not big box-impaired. The solution isn't a change in how we build but a change in how the business encourages change in habits. Interesting ideas for product delivery.

Stefan Benisch - Uses density in a natural manner. Two courtyards let the natural habitat flow through and connect to each other. Thoughtful project, successfully worked architecturally. Unifies all disciplines very well.
Joan Nassauer - Two things stood out - the sweep of residential development along the edge along the riparian ensures that the people experience the natural habitat. Shows us the ways that design must change to preserve habitat, Balance the needs of the people and the other organisms.

Stefan Benisch - Was very well-weighted as well. This project focuses on density, bringing people closer together to use as little space as possible of the natural habitat. Created an architectural landscape in the center, that develops into a more natural landscape as it gets closer to the river.

Joan Nassauer comments - Key idea implemented was questioning and redelineating site boundaries. Preserved more natural area. Put all the people activities in one corridor and achieved a better wildlife corridor and habitat connectivity.
Landscape architect.
Speaking about the habitat part of integrating habitats. It's very foreward thinking, complimented Metro and the Portland region. It's so important from the perspective of protecting the environment on a global level. What happens here matters to the rest of the world. It can only happen with collaboration.
Students must push the professionals to keep pushing the envelope! Genius of this work was in the collaboration. Wildlife in urban areas (we know from research) is part of what makes life good - part of the reason for keeping Integrating Habitats in Portland.
HCA (Habitat Conservation Areas) that we see in Portland area are important to maintain habitat and natural areas.
Pleasure and honor to serve on this jury. I'm coming from a cultural background where architectural work comes mostly through competition so I understand how much work goes into it.
The quality of work was very good. Ideas had to be compressed to two panels, very condensed and constricted. It was interesting to work together with specialists from many different fields on the jury. You usually don't have this kind of interdisciplinary thinking and working.
